Seriously, San José, the bustling capital of Costa Rica, is a captivating blend of old-world charm and modern urbanization. As a hub for commerce, culture, and history, the city offers a rich tapestry of experiences for ex-pats and tourists alike.

We love to travel to San José. It has a charm that isn’t like anything in North America. The places to discover, the food, and the art scene are all to be appreciated.

1. Must-Visit Attractions


The National Theatre of Costa Rica

San José is brimming with historical landmarks, museums, and parks that give a fascinating insight into the city’s past and present.

National Theatre of Costa Rica: This 1,140-seat venue is Costa Rica’s national theatre. It opened in 1897 with a performance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust.

Its performances are high quality, and the building is considered the finest in San José. The entrance fee for a tour is ₡3,500 or about $5.00 for adults

Pre-Columbian Gold Museum

The region's ancient civilizations are housed in the museum with an impressive collection of over 1,600 gold artifacts, from jewelry to ceremonial pieces.

Located at the Plaza de la Cultura, you will find one of Latin America's most extensive collections of gold artifacts, some dating back over 1,500 years.

It’s a beautiful way to learn about Costa Rican history and culture. The price of admission is ₡11,000 or about $16.00.

La Sabana Metropolitan Park

This lovely place is known as the "lungs of the city," this expansive green space offers opportunities for picnicking, jogging, or simply enjoying a stroll.

It is the largest park in San José and was named after Sabana Padre Antonio Chapul because of his enormous contribution by donating the land in 1783.

Central Market of San José

For a truly immersive experience, explore the bustling labyrinth of the Central Market, where you can sample local delicacies and shop for handcrafted souvenirs.

Gallo Pinto: A traditional Costa Rican breakfast dish made from rice and beans, often accompanied by eggs, cheese, and fried plantains.

It’s open Tuesday – Sunday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, and admission is $5.00 with a discount for students. If you want a guided tour, it will cost a little more.

Barrio Escalante

Wander the streets of Barrio Escalante to discover vibrant street art and murals that reflect the city's dynamic culture.

Once just a residential neighborhood, it has become trendy with restaurants and nightlife worth exploring.

Avenida Central
