The Best Beaches in Costa Rica for Strolling, Sunbathing, and Relaxation
by Jeanne in Costa Rica
Welcome to paradise, fellow beach lovers! Costa Rica is famous for its lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, and, most importantly, stunning beaches.
When we moved to Costa Rica, we wanted to be by the beach. Today we live .5 miles from the beach in Guanacaste in Surfside Potrero. Walking on the beach is a daily event for our dogs and us.
So, if you're ready to kick off your flip-flops, grab your sunglasses, and soak in some Vitamin Sea, this blog post is for you!
About Costa Rica Beaches — Why We Love Them!
First, 99 percent of the coastal land in Costa Rica is protected by maritime zones. This means construction is prohibited within 200 meters of the high tide mark.
Next, beaches differ vastly from black sand to volcanic, shell, and pristine white in Costa Rica. They can be jungle-lined with flora and fauna unconcerned with humans and, therefore, ever-present. Sloths, parrots, toucans, and monkeys can be seen and heard regularly.
The untouched nature of beaches and their different sand types make beaches here different from anything you’re used to in North America.
*NOTE — because of maritime restrictions, you won’t find high-rise apartments or condos on the beach, so if you’re looking for this kind of living, Costa Rica living might not be for you.
Manuel Antonio Beach - A Tropical Wonderland
Manuel Antonio National Park is in the Puntarenas Province, Quepos, of Costa Rica and located within this famous park, the beach is a dream come true for those looking for:
• Powdery white sand
• Warm turquoise waters and swaying palm trees
• Plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities (think monkeys, sloths, and iguanas!)
• A bustling beach city.
The breathtaking scenery and tranquil atmosphere make for an excellent place to live, a weekend visit, or a day trip. Just make sure you pack your 50+ sunscreen and a good book!
Playa Conchal – Experience a Shell Beach
Famous for its unique shell-covered shoreline, Playa Conchal offers a serene beach experience perfect for:
• Sunbathing on soft, crushed shells

• Close to Huacas, Brasilito, Flamingo, Surfside, and Potrero, all excellent towns for living.
You can only get to this beach by walking along the shore from Brasilito. However, if you live in any of the above towns, Playa Conchal is an easy day trip.
Nestled between two lush green hills, this beach provides an incredible backdrop for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Playa Hermosa means “Beautiful Beach,” and it is. It is a beautiful place to unwind and relax in the Guanacaste Region of Costa Rica.
Again, depending on where you live in Costa Rica, it’s an excellent weekend or day trip destination. It’s only a mile long, quiet, calm, and laid-back.
Located near the bustling town of Jacó, Playa Hermosa is the perfect spot for families looking for:
• A spacious, uncrowded beach

• A range of nearby activities, such as ziplining and ATV tours
This beach is fantastic for a day of sandcastle building and family fun and offers plenty of nearby dining options when it's time to refuel.
