With its long tourism history, which continues to grow, Costa Rica is one of the safest Latin American Countries for LGBTQ+ people. The country has a strong tolerance and openness towards alternative lifestyles, making it a safe place for LGBTQ+ travelers and ex-pats to live and engage in social activities.
There is no more instability facing LGBTQ+ people than anyone else. The biggest concern for anyone’s safety is petty theft and pickpocketing. Due to the welcoming nature of Costa Rica, there are numerous festivals and events throughout the year celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.
Gay Pride on the Beach 2023 will be held in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.
Two of the hotspots best known for their LGBTQ+ nightlife and events are:
San José, the capital of Costa Rica, has grown over the last ten years into one of the most popular destinations for the LGBTQ+ community and the center of the gay scene in Costa Rica. You will find gay restaurants, bars, clubs, saunas, bookstores, and gay-owned Bed & Breakfast spots.
Manuel Antonio and Quepos are located 105 miles (170 kilometers) southeast of San José in the Puntarenas province on the Central Pacific coast. They are the second most popular gay destination in Costa Rica. Home to a national park and hills with panoramic views, you can find welcoming hotels that fly rainbow flags and Airbnbs welcoming all.
It boasts unspoiled beaches, welcoming hotels, and one of the most gay-friendly beach areas in the world.
The nightlife in Manuel Antonio and Quepos, at the other end of a major road, is easily accessible from the beaches with restaurants and bars, and activities.
*NOTE—No matter how progressive the country is, remember that it is Catholic with many conservative people where cultural stigma still exists, so always watch yourself when leaving areas centered around the LGBTQ+ experience.
